You got the job interview, now what?

So you just scheduled your first interview with a company! Don’t make the mistake of sitting back and wasting time thinking about how youare going to spend your new salary; youve still got a lot of work to do. The better prepared you are for your interview, the better your chances are of walking out of the interview with a confident smile on your face that says, I think I got the job!

We have put together a list of questions to help you prepare for your first interview with DPS Telecom, or any other company. As you review the questions below, take some time to write out your answers to these questions in a notebook, this will help you organize your thoughts and will help you keep track of all your great ideas.

  1. Determine whether your interests, experience, abilities and long term goals match the job and fit with the company.
    • Review the job posting to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements specified in the job posting.
    • Review the job posting to identify specific technical skills (operating certain equipment/software, job-specific skills needed to do the job e.g., typing, etc.)
  2. Research the organization, department and/or the position.
    • Review the web site, if applicable. What are the goals and the values?
    • Talk to others who work for the organization or are in a similar position.
  3. Assess your skills and abilities, ask yourself:
    • Why is this job the right one for me?
    • What is important to me in a job?
    • What are my strengths?
    • What are my achievements? Accomplishments?
    • How does my education and work history relate to this position?
    • Do I work well in a team setting or do I prefer to work alone?
    • What problem solving skills do I have?
    • Do I perform better in a structured or unstructured environment?

Keep in mind that in the competitive business world, there are typically dozens of other highly qualified candidates going after your job. It is very important to make yourself stand out from the herd. One of the best ways to do that is by preparing for your interview as outlined above. If you think about the questions above prior to your interview you will be better able to effectively present your skills, ability and knowledge during your interview and demonstrate that you are a perfect fit within the organization and for the position.
