Five Things to Consider When Purchasing Your Smart Controller

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems are responsible for keeping your sites at an appropriate temperature so your mission critical gear doesn't overheat. Systems can vary in size and HVAC quantity depending on the size of the site and the amount of equipment being cooled.

With such an important task, it's critical to monitor your HVAC units. This can be challenging at unmanned sites, which is why finding the right monitoring equipment for your network is a must.

With the help of sensors, the HVAC Controller G3 can help monitor and control your site temperature, so that your equipment doesn't over heat.

When purchasing remote monitoring gear for your HVAC units, be sure to pick a device that is specifically designed for HVAC systems. Not just any RTU will do. Keep these 5 things in mind when purchasing your HVAC monitoring gear:

  1. Lead/Lag function
  2. Data trending and analysis
  3. Easy to install
  4. Easy to configure
  5. A manufacturer that offers tech support and training

Lead/Lag Functions

A typical site has not one, but at least two (and sometimes more) HVAC units. The purpose of having multiple units is to have a back up when your lead unit is not adequate.

It's important to find a monitoring device that can accommodate multiple units and remotely control them. But its not enough to just turn them on and off. You need a monitoring device that can also control your lead/lag functionality.

A smart controller should be able to remotely and intelligently control lead/lag function. That involves assessing when it's necessary to use the lead, simultaneously use the lag, and switch lead/lag roles.

Data Trending and Analysis

The monitoring device you select should be able to log events for later trending and analysis. This sometimes sounds like an optional extra, but it's critical when trying to diagnose a problem. Data trending can save you money by highlighting problems before they become serious, potentially extending the life of your equipment.

Easy to install

Way too many people forget this point. When you have potentially hundreds of sites to install, its essential that the process is easy. This is especially true when you have multiple and/or third-party install teams.

Easy to Configure

While this may seem like it falls under the category of "Easy to Install", configuration is actually a little different. Installation covers the physical mounting and connecting of the unit. Configuration is setting thresholds and other settings. It's important that the device you select is just as easy to configure as it is to install.

Look for a smart controller that allows you to easily configure your settings at the site. Its ridiculous to have to unpack a device, configure it at your office, and then pack it back up for the trip to the site itself. A good controller should have an interface that allows you to at least make basic changes right on the device, especially if you don't have LAN or a laptop PC at the site. Even if you do have a laptop, using it for device configuration still wastes time.

A Manufacturer That Offers Tech Support and Training

Even if you follow all the previous advice, you're most likely still going to have questions. When purchasing a device, choose one that comes with a lifetime of support. If you have questions about configuration, can you call their support? Is it free? These questions are important to consider when selecting your device, and their answers may make an "inexpensive" controller quite expensive.

Even if reasonable support is available, look for a manufacturer that will teach you how to use the equipment. If you're spending the money to purchase a controller or monitoring device, make sure that you and your team have the tools necessary to use it to its fullest potential.

HVAC Controller G3: Monitoring Designed with HVAC Systems In Mind

The HVAC Controller G3 by DPS Telecom is one device that is designed specifically to control and monitor HVAC systems. With features like Lead/Lag automation, you can have complete visibility of your HVAC systems and know that your site is being cooled efficiently.

The HVAC Controller G3 is easy to install. It features conduit knock-outs on all sides, as well as two sets of grounding lugs, for install flexibility.

It's also easy to configure. The convenient LCD display on the front of the unit helps you configure thresholds, test your units, and configure your sensors. You can make changes to your device configuration even if your site doesn't have LAN access.

The web browser (for sites with LAN) makes it easy to view trend reports and conduct data analysis. This feature makes it easy to catch equipment trouble before you have an outage.

DPS offers free 7x24 tech support, as well as factory-training classes, so that you can learn how to use the HVAC Controller.
