Count alarm events with NetGuardian Persistent Alarm Counters

Sometimes you need to monitor how many times something happens. You might need to:

  • Count lightning strikes detected by a discrete sensor
  • Count generator run cycles
  • Count fuel-tank fill-ups
  • Count door opens
  • Count power consumed by devices with pulse output
  • Count pump revolutions
  • Count any other discrete alarm event

Basic RTUs can't count

You can't keep track of these events with a basic RTU. The hardware isn't the problem. You only need a discrete input. The question is whether your RTU is smart enough to count how many times a discrete alarm has been set.

Alarm counting enables a huge range of clever solutions

Imagine the clever monitoring solutions you could build with an easy-to-use alarm counter. You wouldn't distract your team with every alarm that comes in. You'd be able to notify them only when the count reached a specific important value (ex. generator/pump run cycles demand a maintenance visit, power consumption requires investigation).

"Persistent Alarm Counters" are now available on NetGuardian RTUs

Enabling you to establish intelligent remote monitoring is exactly why DPS has added Persistent Alarm Counters to the NetGuardian line of RTUs. The first model to receive the feature is the NetGuardian DIN. Many other NetGuardians will follow soon based on client demand.

Persistent Alarm Counter Provisioning
You set up a Persistent Alarm Counter simply by choosing a discrete input that will trigger the counter and choosing how high to count.

Persistent Alarm Counter Sensors
The current count value is available to you as virtualized "sensor reading", which means you can set alert thresholds as you would for any analog sensor.

Persistent Alarm Counter Graph Log
You can review timestamped count logs and event graph the count value over time for detailed auditing.

For a complete setup guide, see this How-to Guide: Using Persistent Alarm Counters (PDF).

Tell DPS what NetGuardians should support Counters - and how the feature should evolve

Just like most new features DPS adds, Persistent Alarm Counters were a custom project for one specific situation for one specific client. Still, they were created with maximum future versatility in mind.

We expect that many of you will find Persistent Alarm Counters to be useful in their current form. You just need to tell us what NetGuardian RTU model should get the feature next. It's also possible that you'd like to see a new ability added for your specific situation.
