Case Study: Network Monitoring Trends at Yemen Telecom Sites

By Andrew Erickson

Recently, we had the privilege of working with an international telecommunications company in Yemen to enhance their network monitoring capabilities.

This case study highlights the collaboration with our clients outside the United States and our ability to sell direct to most countries worldwide.

Goal: Monitor Site Status to Prevent Power Outages

Our telecommunications client company faced significant challenges in maintaining stable power feeds and environmental conditions across their sites. Sites include data centers and cable landing stations spread throughout the country.

As the electrical engineering team leader, our client had the responsibility to ensure these critical sites were continuously operational. However, they lacked an integrated monitoring system capable of reporting real-time status and alarms. This capability is crucial in preventing power outages and other operational disruptions.

Our client described the problem in this way:

"We were suffering from the lack of a monitoring system that could report the status and active alarms which may cause unwanted power outage for such critical sites."

Monitoring System Choice: NetGuardian M16 RTUs and T/Mon

After an evaluation period, our client chose the NetGuardian M16 RTUs and the T/Mon System for their Network Operations Center (NOC). This solution provided a scalable platform to meet their immediate needs and support future growth.

The NetGuardian RTUs collected alarms from critical infrastructure. At the same time, the T/Mon System centralized this data for real-time monitoring and response.

The modular design of the NetGuardian RTUs (customizable when ordering; various expansion shelves available) and the T/Mon system allowed for easy expansion in the future.

Deployment of the Remote Monitoring Equipment

The telecommunications company installed NetGuardian M16 RTUs in various locations to collect digital alarms from critical infrastructure components.

These components include generators, UPS, DC rectifiers, air conditioners, fire alarm systems, and fire suppression systems. Additionally, D-Wire sensors were installed to monitor temperature and humidity levels in power and data center rooms.

"The RTUs send the status or any triggered alarms through our LAN network to the T/Mon to be displayed in NOC Screen for reporting & taking the required action to prevent getting into serious issues."

This setup allowed the telecommunications company to have a centralized platform to monitor their entire network. This makes sure that any issues were quickly reported and addressed.

Successful Trial Period and System Expansion

During the trial period, the effectiveness of the monitoring system was demonstrated when an alarm for "LOW Level Fuel" in one of the generators was triggered. This timely alert prevented a potential power outage:

"One alarm that I could not forget is 'LOW Level Fuel' of one of Genset which was about to stop the operation of the generator if the alarm was not transferred to our NOC."

Following the successful trial, the telecommunications company decided to expand the system.

This covers additional sites and integrates geo-redundancy for the master device. It also enhances the monitoring capabilities by transferring analog data and implementing an SMS notification system.

"I am really happy with the multi-protocol system"

The collaboration between the telecommunications company and DPS Telecom resulted in significant improvements in network monitoring and management. The DPS monitoring system provided comprehensive visibility into the stability of power supply and environmental conditions across all their sites.

The telecommunications company (based in Yemen) leveraged the multi-protocol capabilities of the T/Mon system. They chose this device to utilize DCP and SNMP protocols as well as to ensure seamless integration and comprehensive monitoring. The system supported detailed text messages for alarms, allowing for precise and timely responses.

"I am really happy with getting the multi-protocol T/Mon system by using the DCP protocol to collect the alarms & the status from RTUs as well as the SNMP to connect the SNMP devices to T/Mon."

The T/Mon system's ability to support various protocols ensured that the telecommunications company could integrate all their devices and systems into a single monitoring platform. This versatility was crucial for maintaining efficient operations and responding quickly to any issues.

Choose Modular and Scalable Solutions

The modular design of DPS Telecom's solutions allowed the telecommunications company to scale their monitoring system as needed. The NetGuardian RTUs could be expanded to accommodate more sites. The T/Mon system could be upgraded to support additional alarm points and functionalities.

"DPS Telecom team worked together with us to achieve our projects goals by providing more RTUs to be installed in the remaining sites & expanding the T/Mon device to 64."

This scalability means that as the telecommunications company grows or adds more sites, their monitoring system can grow with them. This ensures continuous, comprehensive coverage.

This flexibility enabled the telecommunications company to start with a pilot deployment and gradually extend the system to more sites, incorporating additional functionalities like geo-redundancy and SMS notifications. By choosing DPS Telecom, they secured a reliable, adaptable monitoring solution that could evolve with their operational demands.

Get Reliable and Secure Monitoring

The T/Mon system's well-rounded design ensures high reliability and security. It features dual power feeds, TLS v1.2 secure web interface, and the ability to send 24/7 email notifications. These features provide the telecommunications company with peace of mind, knowing their critical infrastructure is continuously monitored and protected.

"Actually, the DPS Monitor system is helping us a lot in monitoring the stability of the power supply & temperature levels in all our sites."

With these advanced features, the telecommunications company can trust that their monitoring system will perform reliably under all conditions. The client can be confident that their system will provide the necessary alerts to prevent any disruptions.

A Strategic Step for Future Growth

Our partnership with this client has proven to be highly successful. Their company is now equipped with a state-of-the-art monitoring system that ensures operational efficiency and reliability. This case study exemplifies how DPS Telecom's advanced monitoring solutions can address the unique challenges faced by telecommunication providers and other critical infrastructure operators across the globe.
