Proactive Alarm Monitoring: Protect Your Telco Infrastructure from Downtime

Telco Operators Face Unique Challenges

Telecom sites often exist in harsh, remote environments. You might have a central office in one location and smaller cabinets or huts spread across a wide area. Your top challenges generally include:

  • Power fluctuations - Telecom equipment is sensitive to voltage changes, and backup batteries can degrade over time.
  • Environmental issues - Without proper HVAC, high temperatures can damage mission-critical gear. This leads to offline sites, which causes a localized inability to contact emergency services.

Alarm Monitoring Solution for Your Remote Sites

Telco monitoring solution

An example solution built specifically for telco environments with multiple remote locations is shown above. It includes:

  • A main-site monitoring setup, containing:
    • NetGuardian 216 G6 - Collects alarms from your equipment
    • 48 BVM Sensors (2V) - Monitors battery health
    • One Wire-Wrap Panel - Simplifies alarm wiring and distribution
  • A scaled-down setup for slightly smaller sites, including:
    • NetGuardian 216 G6 - (same RTU as used at the main site)
    • 40 BVM Sensors (12V) - Tracks crucial battery voltage levels
    • One Wire-Wrap Panel - Streamlines sensor inputs
  • An optional unit for monitoring environmental conditions:

All components communicate via LAN to deliver real-time alarm updates, voice call-out notifications, and detailed logs of site conditions. These RTUs can also forward data to a centralized master station.

The diagram above doesn't specify a required master station. NetGuardians work with third-party devices like SolarWinds and Motorola UEM (usually using a common protocol like SNMP) to deliver alerts. This is in addition to the (optional) central alarm master station from DPS: T/Mon.

Since you aren't forced to use T/Mon, you have the freedom to integrate other brands into one cohesive system - while still receiving immediate alerts.

This Telco-Specific System Works to Reduce Your Network Downtime

This example configuration shows how a system can be built with telco-specific goals in mind.

The equipment you choose for your solution needs to be selected with purpose. Just like the system above, your system should provide useful elements, which might include:

1. Voice Notifications for Critical Alerts

You need rapid notifications for urgent issues like a site power loss. That's why voice alerts are baked into this example solution. Instead of waiting for emails that could get buried, you'll receive a phone call the moment a serious alarm is triggered. That way, you can quickly respond before it escalates to a full-blown outage.

2. Severity-Sensitive Alerting

Not all alarms need action at 3 AM. This system lets you schedule less-urgent notifications for normal business hours. Meanwhile, life-and-death alarms - like severe battery drop or HVAC failures - still trigger 24/7 alerts to on-call personnel. That keeps your team focused while preventing "alarm fatigue."

3. Full Alarm Details or Summary Options

When you're juggling multiple sites, you may want either comprehensive alarm details for troubleshooting or concise summaries for a high-level view. With this platform, you can easily do both:

  • Zoom in for in-depth diagnostic information.
  • Zoom out for summary alarms. These allow you to stay aware without drowning in data.

4. Battery Reliability

A failing backup battery can wreak havoc on your telco operations. The example solution above includes:

  • 48 BVM (2V) sensors at the main site
  • 40 BVM (12V) sensors at each of the smaller remote sites

These battery voltage monitoring (BVM) sensors provide continuous voltage monitoring. With this level of consistent monitoring, you'll know long before a battery reaches a critical point. This allows technicians to schedule replacements and maintenance proactively. That way, you avoid unexpected battery failures knocking out entire sites.

5. Environmental Monitoring

Overheating is a leading cause of telecom equipment damage. The optional HVAC Controller provides:

  • Temperature and humidity monitoring
  • Remote control of cooling/heating systems
  • Automated alerts if environmental conditions drift out of range

The HVAC Controller eliminates the need to send someone on-site to flip a switch. Instead, you can manage HVAC issues right from your desk. This reduces your travel and truck roll expenses.

6. Centralized Monitoring

The RTUs act as the hub for all sensor data. These remotes forward alarms to on-call staff via voice or email, and offer an intuitive web interface for real-time visibility. The RTUs also forward data to the unspecified master station.

That master station oversees the entirety of the network, creating a singular view of all alarms. The web interface of the master station is even more granular than those of the RTUs, offering a larger scale view of alarms as well as greater alarm detail.

This Alarm Monitoring Solution Is Perfect for Telcos

The example setup we've discussed so far can work well for multiple different industries. This setup was, however, built with the intention of being used for telecom applications.

1. Purpose-Built for Distributed Telecom Sites

This setup was designed specifically for one main site and a few smaller remote sites, which is a very common telco footprint. Of course, we would always modify this design to suit your site sizes and quantities.
