Process SNMP Using Your NetGuardian RTU

SNMP is normally processed by your SNMP manager. But what if you want to convert SNMP from older devices to SNMPv3? What if you need a straightforward way to have SNMP traps trigger an email notification, an SMS text, or a dial-out voice message?

Think about the kinds of things that are possible if you have an RTU that can process inbound SNMP traps on its own.

Output options after your RTU receives SNMP traps:

  • Secure, encrypted SNMPv3 trap to your SNMP manager
  • SMS text message
  • Email notification
  • Dial-out voice alert (if using a dialer RTU)

Handling these scenarios is much easier with an RTU that has built-in SNMP handling. By taking in SNMP traps, your RTU will give you access to all of its built-in intelligence and notification functions, including:

  • Qualification Timers to suppress alerts for alarms that don't stand for a minimum number of seconds or minutes.
  • Accumulation Timers to track the total time that particular alarms have been standing.
  • Derived Alarms to combine data from received SNMP traps with other alarms and the current time/day to draw more advanced conclusions.

SNMP processing by RTUs used to only be possible with specialized TrapRelay RTUs. The feature was so popular, however, that's it's now being incorporated into many of the wide range of DPS NetGuardian & TempDefender RTUs.
