RTU Replacement for Discontinued, End-of-Life, and Legacy Monitoring Equipment

When a vendor discontinues an RTU, you're left with a shrinking window before spare parts dry up and technical support ends. At DPS Telecom, we've specialized in replacing discontinued and obsolete monitoring equipment since 1986. We've developed over 9,800 custom configurations for organizations whose original vendor could no longer provide what they needed.

When Replacement Becomes Unavoidable

Most RTU replacements are triggered by one of three situations:

  • Vendor discontinuation: The manufacturer has ended the product line, stopped issuing software updates, or can no longer source replacement parts.
  • End-of-life support: Technical support has ended, and you're one failed unit away from losing visibility into your remote sites.
  • Post-outage urgency: A site failure revealed that your aging monitoring hardware can't reliably do what you need it to do.

If any of these apply, waiting through a standard 12-18 month procurement cycle isn't usually an option. DPS Telecom routinely delivers custom-engineered replacement solutions in approximately 90 days or less.

What to Look for in a Replacement RTU

Protocol compatibility

The most common complication in RTU replacement is protocol support. Your existing alarm master or network management platform expects specific protocols: SNMP, TL1, DNP3, Modbus, or any number of other legacy formats. A replacement RTU needs to speak those same protocols, or you'll be forced to reconfigure your entire management layer at the same time.

Our NetGuardian RTUs support a broad range of standard and legacy protocols. When your exact protocol isn't already in our library, our engineers can develop support for it as part of your order.

Transport flexibility

A compatible replacement also needs to match your site's transport infrastructure. NetGuardian RTUs support Ethernet, serial, T1, fiber, GSM/CDMA cellular (via external gateway), satellite (via external gateway), and dialup. This covers everything from modern IP networks to legacy circuits still running in the field.

I/O capacity

Make sure the replacement matches or exceeds the discrete inputs, analog inputs, and control relay outputs your current setup depends on. NetGuardian units also monitor temperature, humidity, water intrusion, smoke, and door access, which can close coverage gaps your legacy RTU may have left open.

How DPS Telecom Engineers a Replacement

We don't assume our standard catalog solves every replacement scenario. The process typically works as follows:

  1. Requirements review: We start by understanding what your existing RTU monitors, what protocols it reports, and what your management platform expects.
  2. Virtual prototype: Before any manufacturing begins, we create a detailed mockup so you can review the proposed solution.
  3. Custom development: If your protocol or form factor isn't already in our product line, we engineer it. When your order meets our minimum quantity threshold (approximately 11 units), we don't charge Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) fees.
  4. Field-ready unit in ~90 days: Custom solutions are typically ready for a field trial within approximately two months.
  5. 30-day loaner program: Evaluate the replacement in your actual environment before committing. You pay shipping only.

If you're replacing existing DPS equipment, we offer a 20% trade-in credit toward newer models.

NetGuardian RTU Options

The NetGuardian family covers a wide range of site types and capacity requirements.

Model Best For
NetGuardian 832A High-capacity data transport and telecom sites
NetGuardian 216 Smaller sites with moderate I/O requirements
NetGuardian 480 Medium-capacity networks
NetGuardian DIN DIN-rail installations in compact enclosures
TempDefender G2 Environmental-only monitoring (temperature, humidity, sensors)

If none of these are the right fit, we can modify an existing model or engineer a new one to your specifications. Our article on choosing a multiprotocol RTU for legacy equipment integration covers the key decision factors in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a NetGuardian RTU replace equipment from a different manufacturer?

Yes. As long as we can match the protocol your management platform uses to collect alarms, a NetGuardian can replace RTUs from other manufacturers.

What if my legacy RTU uses a protocol DPS doesn't currently support?

We can develop support for it. T/Mon currently supports 30+ protocols specifically because clients brought us requirements over the years that weren't covered by anything available.

How fast can DPS deliver a custom RTU replacement?

Custom-engineered solutions are typically field-ready within approximately 90 days. Standard catalog models ship faster.

Will DPS support the replacement equipment long-term?

Yes. DPS Telecom provides free lifetime technical support and training with every purchase, handled by engineers, not call center staff.

What if I only need to replace a few units?

We work with organizations of all sizes, from single-RTU installations to networks covering 1,000+ sites.
